Wampee Seedling

The Wampee is a tasty little fruit native to China and is related to the citrus. They grow in clusters and have a jelly-like texture with a sweet, citrus-like flavour and a hint of sour unless completely ripe.

Great looking plants and reasonably cold hardy, tolerating light frosts once mature. Plants are said to fruit in as little as 2-3 years but can take longer, especially in colder areas. I personally know an Auckland tree that fruited in its third year.

There are two main varieties: Yeem Pay is very sweet with a medium size, Guy Sam is larger but has more of a sweet-sour taste (still more sweet than sour).
