Description
The yellow jaboticaba is an excellent species, tasting somewhere between a tangy pineapple and a super sweet apricot depending on the stage of ripeness. The fruit contain a large seed but this is made up for with its delicious flesh. Interestingly, the leaves and stems of the tree are fuzzy as well as the fruit.
Unlike many other jaboticaba, these are known to fruit in just 3 years. However, it is more likely to be 3-4 or longer if you live in a cold part of New Zealand. In comparison, the common black jaboticaba usually takes over 14 years to begin fruiting.
As well as having tasty fruit and being highly ornamental, they are also cold tolerant to around -6c and can be grown in a highly shaded location if you wish. The species is Myrciaria glazioviana but it is also known as Eugenia cabelludo.
