Growing Uvaia in New Zealand

Uvaia (Eugenia pyriformis), also known as uvalha, is a subtropical fruit tree valued for its incredibly sweet, juicy fruit with a distinct tropical flavour. Visitors have described the taste of my fruit as a mix of mango and passionfruit, and some even compared it to a tropical fruit juice.

Flavour and Appeal

Not all Uvaia are the same — some trees produce more sour fruit, so it is important to select sweet types. The fruit is best enjoyed fresh, with maximum sweetness and flavour achieved when the fruit turns from yellow to a rich orange. Abundant harvests can also be used for jams, juices, and preserves but it is best eaten right off the tree when truly ripe.

Ornamental and Cold Tolerance

Uvaia is a highly ornamental tree with glossy foliage and attractive winter form. Mature trees are quite cold-tolerant, capable of surviving temperatures below 0°C, making them suitable for many regions of New Zealand.

Time to Fruiting

Our seed-grown uvaia are sourced from our sweet fruited trees, however, cutting-grown plants are recommended to ensure sweet, high-quality fruit. These will be available later in the year from our nursery.

Growing Conditions

Uvaia thrives in fertile, well-draining soils with full sun or partial shade. Young trees should be protected from frost, while mature trees are hardy and will produce abundant fruit when planted in suitable ground. Regular watering and fertilisation will support healthy growth and fruiting.
