Soursop are a tropical sweet-sour fruit in the annona family, related to the cherimoya (“custard apple”) and sugar apple. It has a strong tropical tangy and sweet taste similar to pineapple/strawberry/citrus and the good ones have a higher level of sweetness than sourness.

This plant is a seedling of the Australian ‘Lisa’ variety known for its strong sweetness and minimal fibre content. While it may not be identical to the parent plant, that is great if you have the means to make one of these produce fruit one day.

These plants are tropical and require extra care to survive winter in most parts of New Zealand. We recommend keeping them in a greenhouse permanently for best chances of success – they are not tolerant of frost. I do not know of anyone with a successfully fruiting plant yet, though they have gone through winter fine in my unheated greenhouses.
