This listing is for a seedling of a giant red variety of the surinam cherry, reportedly quite sweet and of good flavour. The plant is grown from seed imported from Argentina, which should grow close to type but may vary.
Red type surinam cherries can have a resinous/tangy flavour that is somewhat controversial – some people love it and others prefer a more mild sweet flavour (see my other auctions for a darker type).
They’re quite hardy plants, especially in the North Island, suitable for planting in the ground in almost any draining soil type including clay – elsewhere I would recommend container growing. Once established they can handle around -3c, but always protect younger plants from frost.
Fruiting will likely begin in around 3 years and they are self-fertile.
